Miss Japan Universe Emiri Miyasaka's Controversial National Costume

When pictures of Miss Japan Universe 2009 Emiri Miyasaka in her national costume started to circulate in the internet, pageant fans all over the world have only one reaction - Emiri is like a porn star!

Many thought that the costume will kill her chances of making the cut. Obviously, fans including me are disappointed.

But there is one person who is happy about the reactions coming from the fans. This is what she wanted and what she wanted was generated. I am talking about Ines Ligron, the director for Miss Japan Universe.

In her blog, Ines said that the "national costume surely created a big PR buzz around the world."

She admitted that the reaction from fans was the "original concept of her team of designers and stylists". She added that "the plan worked as planned".

That's Ines who loves controversies. It is one of her ways to make her girl a subject of discussions. It is in this way where she can make her candidates so popular so that during the preliminaries of the Miss Universe, Japan will surely be noticed by the fans and the judges.

"The conservative and fashion-dinosaurs are critisizing her costume, meanwhile the fashionistas love it."

"I care only about the movers and shakers in the fashion industry. My vibe is of Junya Watanabe, Yoji Yamamto, Issey Miyake, John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Cavalli and Dolce & Gabanna likes. They have created a new area in fashion and they mind works like mine."

"I love fierce versus safe, this is who I am and will always be. I want to bring the image of beauty queens to a level wich matches mine and not stuggle to remain safe and politically correct. I believe that traditional beauty queens are irrelevant in today world, and this is what most of people think and the real reason why TV ratings around the world are dropping and pageant houses have to close down their operations, instead they should reinvent themselves."

Ines also mentioned that Emiri will be flying to Miami, USA tomorrow to get ready for the pageant in Bahamas.

"Emiri is now packing with her team and will fly tomorrow afternoon to Miami where she has a few TV and magazines interviews. She will also prepare slowly her skin for the heat and dramatic sun of the Bahamas and will not burn. She will stay in Miami for a week and will fly by private helicopter to Nassau with her entourage. She will have a dinner at the Japanese Embassy with the Consul while in Miami."

  1. This crazy piece of fabric makes me suffocate...
As a Japanese woman, it's just unbearable to expect that so many eyes all over the globe will see this expression of Ines Ligron's humongous ego and insanity under the name of "national costume of Japan".

  4. Is this considered high fashion? It looks cheap and nothing original. Creative? It's plagiarized from Dior 2008.
Just image-google "christian dior Pirelli Calendar" and you will find a pic of same outfit from 2008. Ines is such a phony.

  5. This is NOT a national costume. Looks like a foreigner's typical misinterpretation of Japan mixing different Asian countries.
It proves that Ines is just one of them.

Aren't there any Japanese on Miss Japan's team who can say NO to Ines?

We were never taught and never will be taught to show underwear in public.

I personally think the design or the concept is OK if the length was shorter.

  6. It's a shame promoters have to resort to such tactics in order to get public attention, nowadays. And it's an even bigger shame we all fall for it!
As for representing Japan ... most of us are smart enough to realise this does nothing to reveal the real inner beauty of "most Japanese women". Certain power-hungry directors desiring the "big bucks and sensationalism" are just cashing-in on trying to Americanize a few such susceptible Japanese women.

  7. She is beautiful, and she did not need a "buzz" gimmick to place her in the eyes of the world for the Miss Universe Pageant.

This costume will hurt her, especially the devil's head. It is ridiculous.

Her beauty should speak for itself. You can not create beauty with a costume only accentuate beauty.

I know a woman who ran for Miss Japan with her, and the pageant presentation of Chicago was very racy like the above pictures presentation.

I hope that Emri's manager gets fired for it.
Emri is above this type of presentation.

  8. Miss Universe is about sincere, elegance, pure beauty and love..its not about using weird fashion sense to attract the judges or people's attention (and therefore able to get into the top 15 or whatsoever). I understand what the miss universe japan director tryin to do, but he/ she is jeorpadising japan's chance to win, if she get into top 15, i dun tink thr's anyway she will win (even if she gets into top 15, its bcos of the stupid wardrobe??? then wat for we need a representative from japan? then anyone can be miss japan and wear the costume) i am especially disappointed with miss japan herself for not standing up for herself and give some comments and feedback about what she would be wearing. i thought pageants are all about women being outspoken and being thru to urself, not jus listening and doing what other people tell u too...i know everyone wanted to win, but not using this kind of tactics..especially admiting that they purposely do it jus to attract our attention..they got it..now what? m

  9. This is a confirmation modern Japanese society is finished. This utterly vulgar replusive street-hooker no-class rag is a slap in the face to the entire Yamato race and Japanese culture, and I am pretty sure she'll wear it someday to meet the Imperial Couple just to make sure the whole of Asia gets the message. Move over Japan, your brave soldiers, dedicated workers and honored statesmen all labored and died for nothing, this is all it has come down to, its Korea and China's time to shine, and you got yourself to blame in this case. Aborminable lasvicious display on a national scale...Pathetic!

  10. what can i say??!?! hmmm...

Grrr!!! Artwise, i may say this is artistic. the way the colors are combined, the way the photos were taken, the poses... i am awed by it. very good!!!

Grr, in a way that, yeah true, it gives negative notation to the traditional japanese dress.

from my view, maybe it should have been more of the responsibility of the event organizers to filter the dresses before they allow it to be shown to people, just not to make too much fuzz about it. when you design, it has no limitations, as long as it looks good!
